What We Do

The research area of Historical and Masonry Structures deals with structural analysis and conservation of existing buildings, with focus on historical and heritage ones.

The research activity covers inspection, diagnosis, advanced experimental testing, survey, monitoring, advanced modelling and numerical analysis, as well as seismic assessment and protection, repair and strengthening of structures made of historical or traditional materials, like masonry, wood and adobe.

There is a strong link with CIMNE (International Center of Numerical Methods in Engineering, Barcelona) as for the development of advanced softwares for the analysis of masonry structures (macro-, micro- and multi-scale modelling), using the platforms COMET and KRATOS.

Technology transfer to companies is also offered as for modern construction applications based on masonry materials.

The researchers work in close collaboration with international institutions, universities, research centers, as proved by their involvement in many European joint research projects and also educational projects, like the Erasmus Mundus Master Course in Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions (SAHC).
